Visual Field Testing is carried out on site at Elmsdale Vision Centre "...offering the convenience of appointments
to our patients not having to wait for, and travel outside of the area for the testing, helping our Doctors advise you on
the treatment that would be most helpful to you..." What is a Visual Field Test? A visual field test is a computerized test of your peripheral or
side vision. You will be asked to hold your eye still while looking at a central light. The computer will flash lights in
various positions. Some will be bright and easy to see while others will be more difficult to see. You are asked to press
a button every time you see a light flash. By doing this, the computer can determine the sensitivity of your peripheral vision
and compare it to statistics for your age group. This gives the Doctor very valuable information about your eye health and
your vision.
Why is a Visual Field Test Important?
A visual field test can be performed for many reasons. Most commonly,
it is done to check for diseases of the eye, optic nerve or brain which can affect our peripheral vision. The most common
of these diseases is glaucoma. A visual test can also be used to check for ocular side effects of certain medications or to
ensure that an individual passes the driving standards. In rare circumstances, a visual field test can detect a brain tumor
aneurysm.
